Content Guru Proudly Supports SERFCA and the Armed Forces

Content Guru allies itself with several charities and non-for-profit causes that help communities on a local, national, and international scale. In particular, Content Guru takes pride in its support for the Armed Forces, and its connection to the South East Reserve Forces’ & Cadets’ Association (SERFCA).

Content Guru spoke to Kate LoleRegional Employer Engagement Director (REED), about her work with SERFCA and the importance of showing support for the Armed Forces.

What is the history of SERFCA?

SERFCA was established in 1908 as a regional division of the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Associations (RFCAs). RFCAs are publicly funded ‘arms-length’ bodies of the Ministry of Defense (MOD), established by Act of Parliament. Originally, they were designed to provide local support to the Territorial Force in every county. Over 100 years later, the name changed and the number of associations reduced to 13 regions.

Crown servant staff and a body of volunteer members run each RFCA. They support and promote the Armed Forces, reserve service and benefits of the cadets. Such cadet groups include the Sea Cadets, Royal Marine Cadets, Army Cadet Force, Air Training Corps, Combined Cadet Force and Volunteer Cadet Force.

What does a REED do?

I work to deliver Defence Relationship Management on behalf of the 3 Services (Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force). In addition, at SERFCA I work closely with local employers, organisations and charities to understand the mutual benefits of partnering with Defence. I also help to promote the cadets. Generally, most of my time is spent dealing with enquiries regarding signing the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC) or helping organisations with the Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS).

What are the AFC and ERS?

The AFC is a promise by the nation to ensure that those who serve, or have served (veterans), and their families, are treated fairly. Businesses, organizations, local authorities and charities can all sign and pledge their support.

The ERS Scheme helps to publicly recognize an employer’s support for Defense and the Armed Forces community. In addition, the scheme encourages others to get involved, and comprises of Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.

Why should organizations get involved?

I believe the more you get involved, and show your support for the Armed Forces, the more you get out of it. Firstly, developing relationships with other like-minded organizations can be a great way to build your brand. Secondly, there are always opportunities to collaborate and partner with others, no matter how large or small your organization.

The easiest way to get involved is to contact your local RFCA. They will be able to put you in touch with your Regional Employer Engagement Director. You can also go online and search ‘Armed Forces Covenant’.

How is the future looking for SERFCA?

We are always adapting to keep our support to reservists, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs), veterans and cadets, relevant. Following the most recent Integrated Review of Security, Defense, Development and Foreign Policy, the UK is embarking on an exciting time of STEM. This will lead to developing new ways to keep us safe and build resilience. Consequently, this will require us to be agile in the way we task our Armed Forces. Likewise, it will require us to increase the numbers of reservists in specialist roles, for greater flexibility in times of need.

Overall, SERFCA, along with the 12 other regional RFCAs, is likely to play an even more important role in years to come.
