Nearly £3 billion has been spent through the G-Cloud framework since its launch in 2012, with 48% of that being spent with SMEs.
This level of spend provides quantifiable evidence that the Government is delivering on its commitment to the “Use Cloud First” policy from its Technology Code of Practice, part of the Transformation Strategy 2017-2020.
The G-Cloud framework, a collaboration between the Government Digital Service and Crown Commercial Service, is designed to make it faster and cheaper for government departments and public sector organisations to source cloud technology and services.
The framework delivers a number of benefits to Government, including a one-stop marketplace of around 25,000 cloud services with a searchable catalogue of industry-leading vendors and products. From the buyer portal, a shortlist of product specialists can be selected, with service descriptions easily accessible for comparison of features and benefits. For speed of implementation under the framework, contract terms are already agreed and pricing is readily available and fixed for the term.
Due to the iterative nature of the G-Cloud framework (currently, version 10), new technologies, services and vendors can be included at each new iteration, hence the cloud technology represented in the catalogue remains current and evolving, critical to delivering Government’s commitment to embracing technology innovation across the public sector.
The purchasing process for the buyers is further de-risked under the framework as the vendors and products have already been evaluated for suitability to be included in the catalogue. For nervous buyers, test accounts and proof of concept can provide additional confidence to test out new services without making a big financial or technology commitment.
A number of benefits are also available to the vendor, not least the vastly reduced tender process, the targeted and relevant enquiries from buyers and a faster transition to realising revenue as the pricing and contract terms are already rubber-stamped.
